Handmade Crafts
Handmade crafts tend to be more valued than ever despite the overflow of high quality industrial products. This is probably due to the fact that quality handmade items have become a rarity and that each handmade item is unique because it is impossible to create two identical objects with hands alone. But the main reason why the value of handmade crafts tends to rise is the fact that they have a unique appeal that cannot be found in mass produced objects.
Handmade crafts are true small treasures. Do not believe it? Just think on a handmade Christmas card. Even if it is not as beautiful as the printed one it tends to have higher value, especially if created by a loved person. Another great example is handmade jewellery. It is no secret that the finest pieces of jewellery are handmade which means that there is a thin line between crafts and prestige. In fact, some handmade crafts are just as exquisite and beautiful as the finest pieces of art and sometimes it is virtually impossible to distinguish between an artwork and handmade craft.
There are many types of handmade crafts that are typically divided into different categories according to the material used for crafting as well as the purpose of the final product. For example, a handmade Christmas card is categorized as crafts involving the use of paper, while a handmade gold ring would be defined as crafts involving the use of metal according to the use of material. However, a handmade gold ring is always referred to as handmade jewellery.
Another reason why handmade crafts have become increasingly popular in the recent years is the fact that they require a certain level of cognitive abilities as well as specific physical skills. Many crafts can be learned by anyone including children but there items that cannot be created by everyone because like art, they require lots of talent that cannot be learned as easily as making Christmas cards, for instance. And these crafts are the real treasures and are often regarded as artworks although they are technically handmade crafts.
Handmade crafts can have three functions. They are either decorative, practical or both. Crafts that have both aesthetic and practical value are known as functional crafts. A great example of a functional craft is a beautiful handmade ceramic bowl which can be used both as decoration and as a fruit bowl, for instance.
